When Campo San Polo Turns into a Magical Ice Skating Rink

Ice Skating in Venice? Yes – When Campo San Polo Turns into a Magical Christmas Ice Skating Rink!

Ice skating in Venice sounds like a fairytale – and at Campo San Polo, it truly is.

When I first heard about the Campo San Polo ice rink in Venice, I was absolutely curious about what to expect. Venice is already wonderful on a normal day- canals instead of roads, palazzi rising straight from the water – and the idea of an ice skating rink in one of its largest historic squares felt like a winter wonder.

And yet, one late afternoon in December, on Christmas day, I found myself standing at the edge of Campo San Polo, watching people glide across the ice in front of centuries-old Venetian palaces, surrounded by Christmas music, festive lights, and softly glowing shop windows filled with living puppets.

This article is everything you need to know about the Campo San Polo ice rink Venice experience:

  • what the Campo San Polo ice skating rink is really like,
  • when it opens,
  • whether it’s worth visiting,
  • and why it’s one of the most magical things you can do in Venice during the Christmas season.

Campo San Polo Ice Rink Venice: A Unique Christmas Experience

Campo San Polo is one of Venice’s largest and most authentic squares. Unlike San Marco, it’s traditionally a local gathering place, surrounded by elegant but lived-in palazzi, small bars, bakeries, and residential buildings.

Every winter, usually from early December through early January, Campo San Polo transforms into a temporary ice skating rink, becoming a festive hub for locals and visitors alike.

What makes this rink special isn’t its size or technical features: it’s the setting.

You’re skating:

  • In the heart of Venice
  • On a historic campo
  • With Gothic and Renaissance palaces as your backdrop
  • Under Christmas lights, not neon signs

This is not something you experience anywhere else in the world.

My Personal Experience: Late Afternoon Magic at the San Polo ice skating rink

Once I arrived in late afternoon, that perfect Venetian hour when the day hasn’t fully surrendered to night. The sky was still a mild winter grey, and the lights were just starting to glow.

As I walked into Campo San Polo, the sound of Christmas music drifted across the square. Not loud, not commercial, but gentle and festive. Families were gathering, couples holding hot drinks, children tugging impatiently at their parents’ hands, desperate to get onto the ice.

What caught my attention immediately were the windows around the campo. Several featured living puppets and animated Christmas displays, glowing warmly as dusk settled in. It felt like stepping into a storybook.

Then there was the rink itself.

People were skating — some confidently, some laughing as they wobbled — right in front of historic palaces that have stood here for hundreds of years. The contrast was surreal: modern laughter and movement against ancient stone façades.

I stayed longer than planned, taking photos and short videos, soaking in the atmosphere. Venice at Christmas has a quieter, more intimate energy. And Campo San Polo captures that perfectly.
