San Pantalon Church – A Ceiling Like No Other
From the outside, San Pantalon Church looks rather simple. But once you step inside and look up, you’ll witness one of Venice’s most spectacular hidden gem—an enormous fresco on the ceiling that creates an incredible illusion of depth. Painted by Giovanni Antonio Fumiani, it depicts the Martyrdom of Saint Pantaleon and is considered the largest oil painting on canvas in the world.

Well, to tell the truth, my personal favorite, the Frari, is not SO hidden gem. Indeed, it is very visible- if you know where to find it!
The Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, commonly known as the Frari, is one of my favorite places in Venice. It’s a stunning Gothic church that many tourists overlook, yet it holds some of the greatest artistic treasures of the city. Inside, you’ll find Titian’s masterpiece „Assumption of the Virgin”, a breathtaking altarpiece that dominates the church. Another highlight is Canova’s tomb, a striking white marble structure designed in a neoclassical style.

This charming bookstore is a true hidden gem in Vence. Its name, meaning “High Water Bookshop,” refers to Venice’s frequent floods, and the owner has come up with a creative solution—books are stored in bathtubs, boats, and even a full-sized gondola! The quirky atmosphere and friendly cats wandering between the shelves make it a perfect stop for book lovers.

This hidden spiral staircase is one of Venice’s best-kept secrets. Tucked away in a small courtyard near Campo Manin, Scala Contarini del Bovolo offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The spiral design of the staircase is truly unique in Venice and makes for a fantastic photo spot.
A fun fact is that Scala del Bovolo was the filming location for the Orson Welles film Othello (1951), based on the work of William Shakespeare.
