Venice in December: A Must-Have Magical Winter Escape

Venice in December: A Must-Have Magical Winter Escape

Venice is breathtaking any time of year, but there’s something truly enchanting about visiting in December. As someone who travels to Venice every year, I can confidently say that winter—especially around Christmas—is one of my favorite times to experience the city. The crowds are thinner, the air is crisp, and the festive decorations add a magical charm that makes Venice feel even more like a fairy tale.

Venice in December: Fewer Tourists, More Authentic Venice

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Venice in December is the absence of overwhelming tourist crowds.

Unlike the busy summer months when the streets and canals are packed with visitors, December offers a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere. You can wander through the narrow alleys, cross the iconic bridges, and admire the historic palaces without constantly bumping into large tour groups.

For me, this is one of the biggest reasons to visit in winter. I love taking early morning walks along the Grand Canal, where I can actually hear the water lapping against the boats and enjoy the sight of gondoliers preparing for their day without the usual hustle and bustle, and walking during the misty evenings…

In the evenings, the serenity of an almost empty Piazza San Marco is something truly special.

Venice in December: Christmas Magic in the Floating City

Venice might not be as famous for its Christmas markets as some other European cities, but it still offers a festive atmosphere that is both elegant and charming. The main highlight is the beautifully decorated Christmas tree in Piazza San Marco, which stands proudly close to the water, adding to the already stunning scenery.

Walking through the streets, you’ll find festive lights strung across historic buildings, charming window displays, and seasonal treats sold at local bakeries. I always make sure to stop for a slice of panettone or pandoro, traditional Italian Christmas cakes that are especially delicious when paired with a warm cappuccino, but, to tell the truth, I could eat the whole range of the products served in Venice during Christmas time… 🙂

For those looking for Christmas shopping, the small boutiques and artisan shops in Venice offer unique handmade gifts, from Murano glass ornaments to intricate Burano lace. I personally love picking up a few handcrafted souvenirs as Christmas gifts for my family- and for myself as well, of course!

Venice in December: Perfect Time for Seasonal Delicacies & Warm Drinks

One of my favorite things about visiting Venice in December is indulging in the rich and hearty winter cuisine. When the weather gets chilly, there’s nothing better than warming up with a steaming bowl of bigoli in salsa (a traditional Venetian pasta dish with a rich anchovy and onion sauce) or a comforting plate of risotto al nero di seppia (black squid ink risotto).

A must-try winter treat in Venice is cioccolata calda—thick, creamy Italian hot chocolate. Unlike the powdered versions you find elsewhere, Venetian hot chocolate is rich, almost like melted chocolate in a cup. One of my favorite spots for this indulgence is Caffè Florian, the historic café on Piazza San Marco, where you can sip your drink while listening to classical music in a beautifully ornate setting.

But, as I mentioned,  I propose to try the local pastry shops and bakeries’ sweet treats– all Christmas treats are delicious there, I can confirm!

Another winter favorite is vin brulé, the Italian version of mulled wine, which you can find at some cafés and Christmas market stalls. Holding a warm cup while strolling along the misty canals is a simple pleasure that I look forward to every year.

December Weather in Venice: Cold, but Worth It

Many people wonder whether Venice in December is too cold to enjoy. The truth is, while temperatures can drop to around 3-7°C (37-45°F), with occasional fog or drizzle, the city’s beauty more than makes up for it. Plus, with fewer crowds, it’s easier to find a cozy café to warm up in between sightseeing.

One thing to keep in mind is the possibility of acqua alta (high water). This seasonal flooding is more common in November, but it can still occur in December. However, don’t let this deter you—Venetians are well-prepared, and raised walkways are set up in key areas. Waterproof boots can be helpful, but most of the time, you can simply follow the wooden pathways and continue exploring without worry. (Well, most of the time.)

Must-See Winter Highlights in Venice

Aside from the festive lights and seasonal treats, Venice in December has several must-see experiences:

  • La Fenice Opera House: If you love music, December is a fantastic time to catch a performance at Teatro La Fenice, one of the most famous opera houses in the world. The grand setting and exceptional performances make for an unforgettable night out.
  • Burano & Murano in Winter: A short vaporetto ride away, these islands are even more magical in winter. Burano’s colorful houses look stunning against the winter sky, while Murano’s glass factories offer mesmerizing demonstrations of glassblowing—perfect for escaping the cold for a bit.
  • A Vaporetto Ride at Sunset: The winter sunsets in Venice are breathtaking. I always make sure to take a ride on Vaporetto Line 1 along the Grand Canal as the sky turns pink and orange, reflecting off the water in a way that feels almost surreal.
